Art Workshop International

For more than four decades, Art Workshop International has brought artists, writers, and curious travelers to the hill town of Assisi, Italy for immersive summer workshops in visual arts, creative writing, art history, and Italian language.

Participants gather each year for two-week sessions that combine focused learning with the experience of living in one of Italy’s most inspiring cultural landscapes. Mornings are spent in workshops with acclaimed instructors; afternoons and evenings unfold through exploration, conversation, and creative work.

The result is a rare rhythm—one that allows time to focus, experiment, and connect with a community of fellow artists and writers.

Meet our Directors

Art Workshop International is directed by Charles Kreloff and Lynn Gernert, who continue the tradition established by the program’s founders.

Charles Kreloff

Director

Charles Kreloff has overseen Art Workshop International for many years, continuing the creative vision begun by his mother, painter and educator Bea Kreloff.

A designer and art director, Kreloff has worked with major publishing houses including Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Random House, Viking Penguin, Scholastic, and Condé Nast. He has also taught graphic design and typography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

His work in publishing and design reflects the same spirit that defines the workshop: a commitment to creativity, curiosity, and thoughtful collaboration.

Our Instructors

Over the years, Art Workshop International has welcomed an extraordinary group of instructors—Pulitzer Prize winners, celebrated novelists, visionary artists, and beloved teachers.

What makes the program special isn’t just the names—it’s the generosity of the teaching and the spirit of exploration shared between students and faculty.
