DRAWING: LEARNING TO SEE AS AN ARTIST SEES
August 5 - August 18
(Arrive Weds., Aug. 5, depart Tues., Aug. 18; two weeks)
Drawing is fun. It’s mostly fast and satisfying and full of surprises. We will use different materials; soft and softer pencil, powdered graphite, charcoal, chalk, pastel, oil stick, bamboo pen, and brush with wet, dry, smooth, and rough surfaces. There is drawing for accuracy and drawing for expression. We’ll do both.
Your teacher is Edith Isaac-Rose, noted professional artist and director of Art Workshop International for 29 years. Learn from a master how to work from photographs, the model, and still life. You will explore drawing alone and in combination with collage. If you’ve always wanted to learn to draw or expand your depth of drawing, here is that opportunity. It is for all levels, with individual as well as group instruction. Drawing can capture the sense of a new place, is easy for traveling, and requires few supplies. This class is limited in size. A materials list will be provided at registration.

MOSAICS: The Byzantine Muse (I) & Contemporary - The Muse Morphs (II)
(I) July 22 to August 4 (two weeks); (II) August 5 to August 18 (two weeks)
Session I: THE BYZANTINE MUSE - MOSAIC ENCHANTMENT
You will learn the fundamental principles of design, execution, and analysis of key design elements in Byzantine and Roman mosaic through the process of creating one yourself. Under Nina Di Giovanni’s expert tutelage, you will create two mosaic pieces to take home with you. Using the Ravenna “double direct” method in the first week, participants will produce a small copy of a historical mosaic of venetian smalti (mosaic glass cubes) and marble with traditional tools and techniques. In the second week, students will create a mosaic of their own design in the direct method. Workshop includes lectures on Italian mosaics in historical and contemporary settings, daily instruction of 4 hours plus unlimited studio time for individual work, and an optional day trip to Ravenna for a guided tour of their magnificent mosaics.
Session II: CONTEMPORARY MOSAIC - BEYOND BYZANTINE - THE MUSE MORPHS
Enjoy an exhilarating exploration of color, design, and materials in a contemporary context. Bring to fruition your mosaic fantasy in this 2-week workshop focusing on integration of nontraditional materials, resolution of technical challenges, and personal vision. Working with sculptural elements, Venetian blown glass, smalti (mosaic glass cubes and plates), and various materials, extend your mosaic expression in a dynamic and innovative session. Participants will articulate their personal voice and create an art piece which stimulates dialogue and elevates the work from “artisan” to high art. Optional daytrips to Venice to visit glass studios and view the magnificent mosaics of San Marco and to Ravenna to view contemporary mosaics and studios. Note: material costs are about $100 US for each workshop, and students may purchase tools (hammer and hardie) to take home at the end of their workshop.

BRIDGE TO CREATIVITY
July 22 to August 4
(Arrive Wed., July 22, depart Tues., Aug. 4; two weeks)
In this workshop, participants will use concrete approaches to expand their creativity and break through artistic blocks. Although focused primarily on artists, it applies to all creative endeavors.
Exercises include use of movement, music, relaxation techniques, visual concentration, objects for inspiration, writing, and collaboration. Classes include discussion of goals, right brain/left brain differences, symbolic and realistic images, use of dreams, receptivity to inspiration, and the interrelationships of various artistic media.
Participants will sketch, write, share perceptions, and collaborate on an artistic project. They will take with home a framework for continuing the path that has been charted into new creative horizons. Pam Christiansen, professional artist who’s been in West Coast galleries, has taught similar workshops for 20 years and is founder of the Return to Creativity Center, Bainbridge Island, WA, to teach to others the approach that has served her so well.

THE WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPE: Painting "Plein Air"
July 22 to August 4
(Arrive Wed., July 22, depart Tues., Aug. 4; two weeks)
The immediacy of watercolor makes it the ideal medium for capturing
Assisi’s crystalline sky, dark and stately cypresses, and golden
sunflowers "plein air." Using direct observation, students will
explore the light, shadow, form and structure of the Umbrian
landscape
that surrounds them. The soft pinks and yellows of Assisi buildings,
silvery olive trees, and the patchwork fields all call for the
expressive possibilities of watercolor.
Guided by Kamilla Talbot, teacher at both the Arts Students League
and
The National Academy of Fine Arts, you will receive hands-on
instruction on composition, color, and how to create space and form,
from an exceptional instructor. Demonstrations, one-to-one
instruction, and supportive group critiques are incorporated into the
workshop, which is open to artists of all levels. Through your
experiences, you will return home with a watercolor folio that
expresses the timeless, evocative beauty of the Italian landscape.

PAINTING PASTEL PORTRAITS
August 5 - August 18
(Arrive Weds., Aug. 5, depart Tues., Aug. 18; two weeks)
Ellen Eagle, represented by Forum Gallery, has a compelling
method of observation and focus for pastel portraiture. In
an almost zen-like approach, her class studies the model’s
unique structure, color and value relationships. Ellen’s
paintings capture the soul of her subject, and she
communicates that to her students.
“Our goal is to distill complex information through
sustained study into a simply expressed harmonious
construction,” Ellen says. “Working in the radiance of
natural light, we will engage in the subtle and intense
color analysis intrinsic to working in pastel.”
Although Ellen’s medium is pastel, those who have a
mastery of other materials and wish to further their
perception of form and composition are very welcome in the
workshop. Expect an extraordinary result.
