Studio instruction in painting, color theory, and in all media. Participants may specialize in the medium they prefer. Explored in depth: form, spatial relationships, traditional and innovative approaches to techniques and style. Classes include visual thinking, critiques, and slide lectures.
Surrounded by the beautiful Assisi countryside, students will work in and from the landscape, from the wealth of images in Italian art and the 12th century architecture. Experimentation and skill development are encouraged. Classes, limited in size, allow for beginning, intermediate and advanced students to receive individual attention. A suggested materials list will be provided to students.

DRAWING: LEARNING TO SEE AS AN ARTIST SEES
August 7 - August 20
(Arrive Thurs., Aug. 7, depart Wed., Aug. 20; two weeks)
Drawing is fun. It’s mostly fast and satisfying and full of surprises. We will use different materials; soft and softer pencil, powdered graphite, charcoal, chalk, pastel, oil stick, bamboo pen, and brush with wet, dry, smooth, and rough surfaces. There is drawing for accuracy and drawing for expression. We’ll do both.
Working from photographs, the model, and still life, we will explore drawing alone and in combination with collage. If you’ve always wanted to learn to draw or expand your depth of drawing, here is that opportunity. It is for all levels, with individual as well as group instruction. Drawing is handy when traveling or when you have a short time to work and requires few supplies. This class is limited in size. A materials list will be provided at registration.

FEARLESS WATERCOLOR
July 24 - August 6
(Arrive Thurs., July 24, depart Wed., Aug. 6; two weeks)
If you want to get started, re-started, or improve your painting skills in watercolor in a small, supportive group setting, then this workshop is for you. Plein air painting in watercolor offers beginning as well as advanced students a chance to experiment out-of-doors, inspired by the townscape of Assisi and the surrounding Umbrian hill country. Working directly and spontaneously in an easily portable medium, students challenge themselves to select what is important at a given moment and to capture both nature and the beautiful medieval buildings of Assisi.
The teacher will discuss strategies for making the most of time on-site. One-to-one instruction and group critiques will help participants discover their own approaches to the watercolor medium and their individual responses to their surroundings. Field trips are planned to paint and also learn from Italian masters.

BIG IDEAS FROM A LITTLE BOOK!
July 24 - August 6
(Arrive Thurs., July 24, depart Wed., Aug. 6; two weeks)
The development of a sketchbook will be explored in this class with the intent of going home with a book full of ideas for future art. We will use the architecture, landscape, and cultural beauty of Assisi and it’s environs as our springboard to creativity. The use of various materials will be discussed – primarily ink, pencil, marker and brush & gouache. There will be a demonstration of a simple book making process, for those who want to make their sketchbook from scratch, and assignments will be given daily so that those who want to work on their own will have focused goals.
Since classes are small, artists at every level can work together for mutual development with open and individual technical discussions and critiques. How does one use the art of the past to develop personal vision? How can one use landscape and architecture in a contemporary way? We will search for answers to these questions in Assisi.

PORTRAIT, LIGHT, AND COMPOSITION IN PASTEL
August 7 - August 20
(Arrive Thurs., Aug. 7, depart Wed., Aug. 20; two weeks)
In this portraiture workshop, we will observe with a clear eye our model's unique structure, color and value relationships. Our goal is to distill this complex information through sustained study into a simply expressed harmonious construction. Working in the radiance of natural light, we will engage in the subtle and intense color analysis intrinsic in pastel.
The instructor's medium is pastel, but those who have a mastery of other materials and wish to further their perception of form and composition are very welcome in the workshop.
