“Art Workshop International is a sublime merge of Vacation (sunflower fields, Umbrian plains, like-minded travelers, ambling to and fro, dinners on the terrace) and Creativity (painting, reading, poetry, good teachers), a fine way to focus and let go.”

—Frank McCourt,
Author of Angela’s Ashes, ‘Tis, and Teacher Man

Assisi in the heart of Umbria lies halfway up the slopes of Mount Subasio. A town remarkably rich in priceless art treasures, its medieval character has been maintained and can still be discovered in the narrow streets and squares. Here Giotto, Cimabue, the Lorenzetti brothers, and Simone Martini painted some of the most breathtaking art in Italy. In this special environment, Art Workshop offers a series of creative courses to make your sojourn in Assisi an unforgettable experience.

Art Workshop International celebrates its 32nd year in Italy. Under the direction of Edith Isaac-Rose, Bea Kreloff, and Chris Spencer artists and writers are invited to join committed adults in an atmosphere of serious study and enjoyable play. Besides Frank McCourt, past teachers and visiting artists include Dorothy Allison, Michael Cunningham, Marilyn French, Vivian Gornick, Maxine Hong Kingston, Tony Kushner, and Grace Paley. Classes are five days a week with two days off for day trips or short-term travel. Participants are encouraged to stay on for another two-week class or spend an extra week in Assisi to continue their study/relaxation independently.

Art Workshop International welcomes the support of various arts and writing organizations around the world. We are coordinating with arts and writing groups because our programs are of interest to their members.

College Credit Offered
Through John Cabot University in Rome, we offer creative writing courses for U.S. college credit. College students successfully completing these two-week courses will receive 3 credits—all classes are on a pass/fail basis.
